Australian right-wing extremist Brenton Tarrant, who was convicted of killing 51 people at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 2019, is appealing his sentence.

Tarrant has previously confessed to all the murders, as well as 40 attempted murders and terrorist crimes, but now claims he was subjected to "torture-like and inhumane" conditions during the trial, which made him unable to make rational decisions when he confessed to the crimes.

He was sentenced in 2020 to New Zealand's harshest sentence: life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. It was the first time the sentence had been imposed in the country.

Just a few weeks after the attack in March 2019, the New Zealand Parliament voted to tighten the country's gun laws, including a ban on semi-automatic weapons and a buyback program.
