The conflict he calls the "deadliest" between Israel and the Shia militia in decades.
Biden speaks after a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon has been clarified. On Tuesday evening, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave the green light to his government to approve the American proposal.
Over the next 60 days, Israel will gradually withdraw its remaining forces, and civilians on both sides will soon be able to return safely to their communities and start rebuilding their homes, says Biden.
"New start for Lebanon"
At the same time, Biden emphasizes that the agreement means "a new start for Lebanon", but is clear that Israel retains the right to self-defense – which Israel also demanded from the US during the negotiations.
Let me be clear, if Hezbollah or anyone else breaks the agreement and poses a direct threat to Israel, Israel retains the right to self-defense, in accordance with international law.
In a joint statement with Macron, Biden writes that the ceasefire will "secure Israel from the threat of Hezbollah and other terrorist organizations operating from Lebanon".
Netanyahu has thanked Biden for the US's engagement in the negotiations, according to the Israeli Prime Minister's office, reports CNN.
Furthermore, Biden says in his speech that they will make new attempts to also achieve a ceasefire in Gaza.
"A glimmer of hope for the entire region"
Germany's Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock welcomes the news and says it constitutes "a glimmer of hope for the entire region", according to a statement.
EU chief Ursula von der Leyen calls the ceasefire "very encouraging news", especially for the Lebanese and Israeli people.
"Lebanon will have the opportunity to increase internal security and stability thanks to Hezbollah's reduced influence", she writes on X.
Sweden's Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard (M) also welcomes the ceasefire.
"The civilian suffering has been great on both sides for a long time. The government continues to urge a ceasefire in Gaza, the release of hostages, and the resumption of serious efforts towards a two-state solution", she says in a written statement to TT.
