It was already clear in June that the former national team captain would be knighted. The formal ceremony did not follow until almost six months later, but was, judging by Sir David's strong experience of the event, well worth the wait.
The 50-year-old has long been a strong advocate for the British monarchy.

At Windsor, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star was accompanied by his wife Victoria, a former member of the pop group Spice Girls, and his parents Ted and Sandra.
Victoria is now Lady Beckham.
Sir David was knighted for his contributions to football and for his commitment to charity.
To mark the day, Sir David wore a grey suit, designed by Lady Beckham.
King Charles, known for being well-dressed, appreciated Sir David's choice.
"He said he was quite impressed," Sir David told the Press Association news agency.
Beckham sees the king as a role model when it comes to dressing smartly and elegantly.
He's kind of the most elegantly dressed man I know, so he inspired a lot of my dressing over the years and he definitely inspired this look.
