It was shortly after 1:00 PM, local time, that the plane crashed into the school, which has around 2,000 students from preschool to high school.
In video clips from the scene, you can see how fire and smoke rise from the school at the same time as people run away from there. Local media reports on the desperate and panicked scene that unfolded when the accident occurred. Parents are said to have run around and looked for their children while locals and rescue personnel took injured people to safety.
According to Mohammed Maruf Islam, deputy chief of a hospital in Dhaka, most of the injured were between 8 and 14 years old, something that is also confirmed by the country's health department. Over 60 children are said to have been taken to a hospital specializing in burn injuries.
"Searched frantically for my cousin"
Tofazzal Hussein says that his cousin is one of the students who died in the accident.
"We searched frantically for my cousin at different hospitals... He was in eighth grade. In the end, we found his body," says Tofazzal Hussein to AFP.
18-year-old Rahman Shafi is a student at the school, Milestone School and College, and was on the school grounds when the accident occurred.
"We were on the playground for the older students. There were two fighter planes. Suddenly, one of the two planes crashed here (on the younger children's playground)," he says to AFP.
Technical fault
The plane is said to have "experienced a technical fault" according to the military, but the cause will be further investigated by a special committee.
On Monday evening, local time, rescue workers continued to search for bodies in the rubble.
The accident is described as the worst plane crash in the country in several decades. The interim government, led by Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammed Yunus, expresses great sorrow over the event and has declared a day of national mourning on Tuesday.
"This is a moment of deep pain," writes Yunus' administration on X.
