The Asian lion has been one of the world's most endangered mammals for many years. But from 1995 to today, the population has grown from 304 to 891 animals. The lion has been a coveted prey since the beginning of the 1900s and now lives in a national park in the state of Gujarat in India.
Great efforts have been made to improve the lion's situation and the latest count covered an area of 35,000 square meters.
At the same time, the World Wildlife Fund WWF warns that the Asian lion is still threatened by genetic inbreeding because there is only one population in one and the same place. The population is also extra sensitive to epidemics or natural disasters such as forest fires.
Asian lions are related to their African cousins, but are smaller in size.
