The statues are to depict people from a finished list of traditional heroes such as George Washington, Martin Luther King, Steve Jobs, Kobe Bryant, Whitney Houston, and Johnny Cash. They must also be made of marble, granite, bronze, copper, or brass.
It is not clear where the garden will be located, but it will be "a public space where Americans can gather to learn about and honor American heroes", writes the Trump administration in the press release.
The National Garden of American Heroes is to be completed by the 250th anniversary of Independence Day.
The statues will be paid for with previously frozen grants to the cultural sector.
