Japanese authorities on Tuesday assessed damage in affected areas, including along the coast in the northern parts of the country. The quake also reportedly affected cities such as Sapporo and Hachinohe.
"We put people's lives first and do everything we can," said Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
Most of the injured people were hit by various types of falling objects, reports public service channel NHK.
The 7.5 magnitude quake, centered about seven miles off northeastern Japan, struck late Monday night local time. Tsunami warnings were issued but later withdrawn.
