Egypt were well on their way to the World Cup's biggest upset so far in Tuesday's round of 16 when Mostafa Ziko made it 2-0 in the 67th minute.
So far, everything had gone against Lionel Messi's Argentina.
In the first half, Messi had missed a penalty, hit the post, and Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir was growing into a giant in goal.
Three goals in 13 minutes
But Messi and his teammates got their revenge in just 13 minutes at the end of the second half.
With a two-goal deficit, there was only one thing to do: throw everything forward, and that's what they did.
In the 79th minute, Messi sent a fine cross to his teammate Cristian Romero, who headed the ball into the net.
Messi himself found the net five minutes later, his eighth goal in the World Cup, the most of all, and his 21st goal in World Cup history.
And in added time, the comeback was completed by a goal from Enzo Fernandez.
Three goals in 13 minutes, complete euphoria among the fans in the stands and a Lionel Messi moved to tears in celebration.
The mood in Egypt was more somber. The nation was on the verge of a historic upset, shaking the South Americans.
Had goal disallowed
The team took the lead after a quarter of an hour through Yasser Ibrahim's header, the team's goalkeeper Shobeir saved Messi's penalty in the 21st minute and Egypt showed smart play against confused Argentine players.
In the second half, the team showed some sharp moves and seemed to have made it 2-0 through Mostafa Ziko in the 58th minute. However, the goal was disallowed after a VAR review for an incident that occurred 17 seconds before the goal.
However, Ziko got his revenge nine minutes later after another quick move when he scored a goal that stood.
But the nation's World Cup script ended in the cruelest way possible, as they saw Argentina's players hoist Messi onto the pitch after a stunning turnaround.
