Arab Leaders Back Egypt's Vision for Gaza's Future at Cairo Summit

The President of the United States wants to relocate all Gazans to neighboring countries such as Jordan and Egypt and transform the area into the "Middle East's Riviera". Regional leaders reject all plans that involve the displacement of Gaza's population.

Tuesday's meeting within the powerful Arab League takes place the day after Israel's Prime Minister once again expressed support for Trump's plan. "Visionary and innovative", was Benjamin Netanyahu's assessment.

The plan that has now been given the green light in Cairo calls for, among other things, a transitional government aimed at preserving the prospects for a two-state solution, reports Sky News Arabia. The goal is to hold elections in the Palestinian territories within a year, according to a draft that the international community is urged to quickly support.

According to the UN's calculations, it will cost over 53 billion dollars, equivalent to nearly 560 billion kronor, to rebuild Gaza after Israel's bombings.

Several heads of government are participating in today's Cairo meeting, while some countries have sent their foreign ministers or other high-ranking officials. Among others, Egypt's President Abd al-Fattah al-Sisi and Syria's interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa are present. However, Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman did not show up.

The Arab League (abbreviated LAS in English, League of Arab States) is a cooperation organization for Arabic-speaking states founded in 1945.

The League operates as a common platform for Arab states on issues related to economy, culture, and politics.

The members have pledged cooperation on economic issues and not to use weapons against each other. However, several bloody wars have occurred between actors from different member states.

The Arab League consists of 22 member states today and has its headquarters in Egypt's capital Cairo.
