Doctors Without Borders stated that the hospital, located in the northern city of Old Fangak, was bombed early on Saturday, and the city's market was attacked later. At least seven people have been killed and 20 injured, according to the organization. There are also reports of further damage in the area.
The local official Biel Butros Biel stated earlier that a nine-month-old baby was among the dead and that the attack was carried out by a drone and a plane, and that the planes belonged to the South Sudanese government. The reports have not been verified.
According to Doctors Without Borders, the hospital was the only functioning one in the area, and the only place where tens of thousands of people could receive care.
"The pharmacy was destroyed. All medical supplies gone", the organization writes in a statement.
Doctors Without Borders say that the attack is a "clear breach of international law".
"Hospitals are not a target. Stop the bombing."
Ever since South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in 2011, there has been unrest in the country.
