The Rubio imposter is believed to have used AI tools to mimic the foreign minister's voice and writing style, according to a high-ranking American official and a telegram that The Washington Post has been made aware of.
American authorities do not know who is behind the scams, but believe that the intention is to manipulate powerful officials "in order to gain access to information".
Fejk-Rubio began the scam in mid-June when he created an account on the Signal app with the username "[email protected]" to then contact unsuspecting foreign and domestic politicians and diplomats.
The White House administration frequently uses Signal as a messaging service. Earlier this year, the US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz was forced to resign after war plans leaked from the chat when the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic was invited to a chat in the app for unknown reasons.
