Ahead of the World Cup: "We older people never give up..."

There will be a need for a generational change in the national handball team in the coming years. At the same time, Thea Kylberg is the only championship debutant in the World Cup squad. I haven't looked at the numbers in the players' passports that much, says national captain Tomas Axnér ahead of Thursday night's premiere against the Czech Republic.

It is the most experienced Swedish squad ever at a women's championship.

For example, Jamina Roberts is making her 19th major championship, Nathalie Hagman her 16th and Linn Blohm her 15th.

The squad has an average age of just over 29 years and has together played in 120 major championships and approximately 1,800 international matches.

"Yes, we older people never stop. But I guess we still perform well," says Nathalie Hagman.

But it is clear that new generations must come to take over after us.

“Youngest in several years”

The generational change in the national team is going a bit slowly, admits national team captain Tomas Axnér.

We will need to make a generational change. But as long as it happens step by step and we nurture the younger players and bring them in in a sensible way, I think we will be able to handle it, he says.

But for the World Cup I have selected the players who I think are the best right now.

In addition to championship debutant Thea Kylberg, 21, there are only two other players born in the 2000s – Tyra Axnér and Nina Koppang, both 23.

On the other hand, they are already making their fifth and fourth major championships respectively.

"It's looked pretty much the same since I joined. Tyra and I were the youngest for several years," says Nina Koppang.

But I still think I've had very good experiences with the mix of more experienced players and slightly newer ones.

Olympic offensive

The Swedish Handball Association has had several projects in recent years to accelerate the generational change. This spring, an “Olympic offensive” was launched together with the Swedish Olympic Committee for the women's national team, to invest in a number of young promising players with a view to the 2028 and 2032 Olympics respectively.

The focus during the sessions is on, for example, training theory, dietary advice and performance psychology.

We want to prepare them for national team games and international handball at an earlier stage. We cannot afford to lose these players, says Tomas Axnér.

Eight young players are included in the 2028 group, among them this year's only championship debutant Thea Kylberg.

It feels great to be one of those people they believe in long-term, she says.

Then again, I think there are many other talented young people too, who may not have had the chance yet but are closer than people might think.

Thursday's World Cup premiere against the Czech Republic starts at 8:30 p.m.
