Svenska kraftnät is now initiating a new procurement of a so-called power reserve – electricity production that can be quickly deployed in the event of a crisis in the electricity supply.
Earlier this fall, the authority canceled the procurement. No company wanted to take on the assignment at the price that Svenska kraftnät had set as a ceiling, according to a regulatory framework set by the EU.
But there is urgency, winter is already here, which is why Svenska kraftnät set the deadline for incoming bids to December 10. The idea is that the electricity reserve will be in place between January 15 and March 15.
"Our task is to ensure that we have a robust electricity system that meets the goal of security of supply. We are investigating and using all the tools in the toolbox that are relevant to achieve this," says Eva Vitell, Division Manager Systems at Svenska kraftnät, in a press release.
In the past, in winters, the oil-fired Karlshamnsverket has served as Sweden's power reserve.
