The already difficult Shinnecock Hills, on Long Island outside New York, was not made any easier by the strong winds on Thursday.
Åberg was one of the players who best handled the tough conditions. The blue-and-yellow golf star was in the lead for a while, but fell back a bit when he made his second bogey of the day.
Åberg made three birdies in a solid round, with both his long game and his putting looking promising for the rest of the US Open. After the first round, he was tied for ninth.
"It was a good day. I'm happy with how I scored, above all. It's tough, it's windy," Ludvig Åberg told Aftonbladet.
The Swede played in the same three-ball as Rory McIlroy, who also went -1.
Alex Norén, the second Swede in the competition, had it harder and finished the first round at +4, placing 92nd.
"This is one of the sickest courses I've played. It's very good, but extremely difficult," he told Aftonbladet.
World number one Scottie Scheffler is also well off the lead, at +2 and tied for 49th place. Unthreatened in first place is American Wyndham Clark.
