Over 80 current and former participants in the Berlin International Film Festival are criticizing the festival's failure to take a position on Israel's treatment of Gaza.

In an open letter, Javier Bardem, Tilda Swinton and Tobias Menzies, among others, express their disappointment at the management's "censorship" of artists who have spoken out about the war.

The letter is published in the middle of this year's festival, where politics has become a central issue. The jury chairman, German director Wim Wenders, said at the opening that filmmaking should remain outside of politics - something that sparked anger.

According to the signatories, film and politics are inseparable. They also point out that over 5,000 film workers internationally have refused to cooperate with Israeli film companies. The letter calls on the festival management to take a stand on the Gaza issue.
