When the memorial ceremony was held in 2020 on the 75th anniversary of the liberation, 200 Holocaust survivors attended. This year, around 50 came, including two from Sweden. One of them was Leon Weintraub, who was one of the speakers at the ceremony.
A number of politicians and royalty were in attendance. Among them were French President Emmanuel Macron, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj, and British King Charles.
Sweden was represented by, among others, Crown Princess Victoria, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (The Moderate Party), and Culture Minister Parisa Liljestrand (The Moderate Party).
Ulf Kristersson described the ceremony as moving and "beautiful in a very special way".
It was hard not to be caught up in the speeches that detailed what had happened so long ago, he said to TT's photographer.
The liberation of Auschwitz was also commemorated in Sweden on Monday.
King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia attended a memorial ceremony at Eric Ericsonhallen, while Prince Daniel participated in a memorial service for the victims of the Holocaust at Stockholm's synagogue.
