An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 occurred off the coast of Istanbul on Wednesday. The earthquake and about 50 powerful aftershocks caused panic and made the city's residents seek out squares, schoolyards, and other open areas.
No people are reported to have died, but around 150 people were injured as they "jumped or tried to jump from heights in panic", according to Istanbul's governor Davut Gül. The injuries are not said to be life-threatening.
An abandoned building collapsed, but otherwise the material damage is reported to be limited.
The earthquake's epicenter was located about 40 kilometers southwest of Istanbul in the Sea of Marmara at a depth of 10 kilometers.
In February 2023, over 50,000 people died in an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 in southern Turkey and Syria.
