In a statement, the police say that a few supporters had come to the arena with the intention of disrupting the order and threw bangers and smoke grenades onto the pitch, which led to the match being interrupted.
The police state that 42 people were injured, of which five were police officers, and a dozen people have been arrested.
Maccabi Tel Aviv claims that the interruption of the match was due to bangers thrown by the rivals' fans, not their own away supporters.
The home team Hapoel, on the other hand, directs strong criticism at the police's decision to interrupt the match.
"From the conversations before the match, it seems that the police prepared for a war and not a sports event," the club writes on X and continues:
"The disturbing events outside the arena, and after the hasty and scandalous decision not to carry out the match, only show that the Israeli police have taken control of the sport."
The violence comes just days after Maccabi Tel Aviv fans were prevented from traveling to Birmingham, England, to watch the team's European League match against Aston Villa on November 6.
