The announcement comes after federal judge Carl Nichols gave the administration the green light to proceed with its plan to lay off thousands of employees at the aid agency in the USA and around the world. Earlier in February, Nichols paused the layoffs of staff, as two trade unions opposed the proposal.
It was at the beginning of February that the announcement about the agency being shut down came. Since then, the headquarters in Washington has been closed and thousands of American aid and development programs worldwide have been terminated in an attempt to freeze foreign aid – as Trump and his "efficiency chief" Elon Musk claim that aid and development work is wasteful and promotes a liberal agenda.
