The origin of the murder early on Monday evening, April 10, is said to have been that the man confronted three youths at a pedestrian tunnel in Skärholmen in southern Stockholm.
What we know is that one of the three says something when Mikael and his son cycle past. When they park their bicycles, Mikael decides to go back, says prosecutor Ove Jäverfelt.
Then a verbal exchange ensues, which ends with the shooting.
Total of three shots were fired. The first shot is believed to have been fired beside the 39-year-old.
It then appears that Mikael moves towards the person who shoots, and he is shot with two shots in the upper body.
Ruthless
The murder is described in the indictment as particularly ruthless, since the man was shot in front of his son, who was about 60 meters away.
The son was able to provide information about the perpetrator's appearance, how many people were in the tunnel, and briefly describe what had happened shortly after the shooting.
He is the one who was closest to the crime scene and the actual event, and had an eye on his father, says Stina Roos, investigator of serious crimes.
Nothing indicates that there were any prior contacts between the man and the youths, she says.
We have mapped all the defendants and the plaintiff to see if there might be some underlying motive. We have not been able to find any contacts.
In front of his son
After the murder, the shooter fled on a bicycle where the 18-year-old's DNA was later found.
About two months after the shooting, on June 17, what is believed to be the murder weapon was also found in a basement storage room in Skärholmen. On the pistol, DNA from two people was found, including the 18-year-old.
The man, 17 years old at the time of the incident, is linked by the police to a criminal network called Skärholmsfalangen.
At the time of the murder, he was wanted for another shooting in the area in December 2023. Four days after the murder, he was arrested in Eskilstuna, suspected of the December shooting. About a month later, he was also arrested for the murder.
The man has long been involved in criminal circles, and the police believe that he was criminally active already at the age of 13, as stated in a LVU decision in 2021.
Four more people are being prosecuted, suspected of gross obstruction of justice and aiding and abetting gross obstruction of justice. They are said to have helped wash the bicycle that the shooter fled on.
The 18-year-old denies the murder but admits to gross weapons offense. He claims to have test-fired the weapon earlier in April, but denies being present at the murder. The other four deny everything.
