A 15-year-old boy has been convicted of the murder of a 52-year-old father of a small child who was shot to death outside a restaurant in Uppsala in May. He has been sentenced to three years in closed juvenile detention.

The boy has admitted that he carried out the shooting after accepting a murder mission for payment from unknown individuals via a chat.

During the trial, he explained that he wanted to withdraw from the assassination mission, but felt compelled to do so anyway due to threats. However, according to the court, this is not sufficient reason not to convict him.

"If an adult had committed the same crime, the sentence would have been life imprisonment, but such a young child cannot be sentenced to life," says Councilor Karin Lambertz in a press release.

No expulsion

The prosecutor has requested that the 15-year-old also be deported, but the district court rejects this.

"He has a very strong connection to Sweden and a very weak connection to his homeland, for example, he does not speak the language and has no contact with any relatives there," says Lambertz.

A 17-year-old boy is also convicted of aiding and abetting murder and of involving a minor in crime. This is for having provided the 15-year-old shooter with the gun used in the murder and a hand grenade. He also receives closed juvenile care, for three years and six months.

Another teenage boy is convicted of failing to disclose a murder, while two accused boys are acquitted of the same crime.

Shot the wrong person dead

By all accounts, the murdered man was not the intended target for the shooting.

Prosecutor Andreas Nyberg has previously stated to UNT that the boy had taken on a vague assignment to “shoot someone” at the restaurant. After the murder, the boy fled on an electric scooter and then jumped into the Fyrisån River before being arrested by police.

The man who was murdered had come to Sweden from Egypt just a couple of months earlier to work. According to a relative, he had traveled here to save money for his children's wedding. In Egypt, he had a wife and nine children, six of whom are minors, according to UNT.

The investigation has not been able to show who was targeted.
