10 cultural highlights to look forward to in 2026

Stephen King's classic becomes a horror opera and a Mother's Day celebration goes awry. Here are ten cultural events to look forward to in 2026.

"The Twelve-Shilling Opera"

Folkteatern Gävleborg and director Linda Mallik set Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill's play about the moral confusion of the Weimar Republic in contemporary Sweden.

Premieres at Gasklockorna in Gävle on 9/1 and at Hälsinglands Träteater in Järvsö on 19/6.

“Mother's Day”

Three reluctant sons celebrate a mother who doesn't want to be celebrated. Helena Bergström plays the mother in Alex Schulman's second play at Dramaten.

Premiere 24/1 at Dramaten in Stockholm.

“Badin – beyond surface and mask” and “Sergel – fantasy and reality”

Parallel to the large exhibition on sculptor Johan Tobias Sergel, a smaller exhibition about Badin, a young man of African origin who was given to Queen Lovisa Ulrika, is on display.

19/2–9/8 at the National Museum in Stockholm.

“Selma and a beautiful tale from a happy time”

A newly written opera by Mats Larsson Gothe and Maria Sundqvist about the crucial friendship between the 70-year-old Selma Lagerlöf and Baroness Henriette Coyet.

World premiere at Wermlandsoperan on February 26.

“Mission Holgersson”

A contemporary journey through Sweden based on interviews from all over the country. Stina Oscarson started the project for the National Theater; it has now been completed by Astrid Menasanch Tobieson and Joakim Rindå.

Premiere March 14 in Ystad.

“Brassaï – The Secret Signs of Paris”

Hungarian-French photographer Brassaï captured the people and graffiti of the city. Now his images from the Paris nights of the 1930s are being shown on a large scale in Sweden for the first time.

28/3–4/10 at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm.

"The Gothenburg Riots" by Jerker Beckman

25 years have passed since demonstrators protested against George W. Bush, the EU and the market economy in Gothenburg. Despite peaceful intentions, violence and chaos erupted. The play is based on interviews, among other things. Niklas Hjulström directs.

At Gothenburg City Theatre, premiere March 27.

"The Shining"

Horror opera by Paul Moravec and Mark Campbell based on Stephen King's classic from 1977. Recommended for ages 13 and up.

At Malmö Opera, premiere August 22.

"Ultraviolence", new novel by Tone Schunnesson

In her third novel (7/5), Schunnesson writes about a family in a run-down castle in Skåne where murder could be a way out of breaking established family patterns.

"Never Wipe Tears Without Gloves", newly written musical

Fredrik Kempe and Jonas Gardell have written the musical based on Gardell's novel trilogy about the couple Rasmus and Benjamin and the then-new deadly disease AIDS.

World premiere at Göta Lejon in Stockholm 24/9.
