The 120-metre-long ship caught fire on Tuesday afternoon after what was described as a loud explosion. A major rescue operation was launched, with the Swedish Sea Rescue Society and the Coast Guard also assisting.

It is unclear what caused the fire, which was extinguished in the late afternoon. The 15 crew members are all said to be unharmed and no one needed to be evacuated.

The ship is carrying sulfuric acid, and the maritime rescue service feared that the acid would leak, but the ship's hull is reported to be intact, according to NRK.

The police initially said that the ship had run aground, which the shipping company denies.
